The top 1% of Americans now control 31% of the nation's wealth, while the bottom half,165 million people,share just 2.5%. That disparity is the largest it's been since the 1920s. How did we get here? Back in 1989, the top 1% held 23% of the wealth. That was already unequal, but a third smaller than today's figure. The shift wasn't accidental.
