Richard Feynman The Pleasure of Finding Things Out

Richard Feynman once pushed back on an artist friend who insisted science strips beauty away. The friend would hold up a flower and claim a scientist's dissection makes it dull. Feynman called that kind of nutty. He could see the flower's aesthetic too, maybe less refined, but he also saw cells, inner structures, processes unfolding at scales invisible to the naked eye. That layered beauty doesn't replace the surface, it compounds. He pointed out the colors evolved to attract insects, which opens a door: do lower forms have an aesthetic sense? Why is it aesthetic at all? Knowledge only adds excitement, mystery, and awe. It never subtracts. From The Pleasure of Finding Things Out
