Nikola Tesla South Fifth Avenue Fire

March 13, 1895 in New York saw the lab of Nikola Tesla go up in flames after he stepped out earlier that day and came back to find years of relentless work reduced to smoking ruins. The blaze wiped out nearly every custom-built apparatus, model, tool, note, photograph, and demonstration piece he owned, including many items previously shown at the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition. Material damage hit about $50,000, which is roughly $1.6, 1.8 million today, and Tesla had no insurance coverage for this massive loss. This happened while he was deep into experimenting with high-frequency electricity, wireless transmission, and phenomena later tied to radio and X-rays, having already secured victory in the War of the Currents with his AC system. He was even scheduled to demonstrate his long-distance wireless receiver just days later. Despite the devastation, this event didn't slow him down because six hours after the fire he was already back reconstructing lost research. Still, the destruction altered his career trajectory significantly as he faced financial struggles and fewer commercialized breakthroughs moving forward. The absence of unique equipment and lost time delayed his wireless power ambitions greatly. Some observers noted it was something more than a personal calamity, calling it a misfortune to the whole world.
