Sir Alex Ferguson West Ham relegation promise

sir alex ferguson explains how a promise made in a car park turned into west ham's relegation in 2011. it started months before april 2011 when manchester united lost 4-0 to west ham in a carling cup tie. ferguson had fielded young players and the mood was hostile. towards the end of that game wally downes asked wes brown as he waited to replace jonny evans if he was going on to make a difference. that comment plus aggressive taunts from supporters in the car park got under ferguson's skin. he told them straight up that manchester united would be back in april and they would relegate west ham. but when the teams met again in the closing weeks of the season united were 2-0 down at half time. ferguson admitted he was a long way from fulfilling his promise so he tossed the game plan out the window. he pulled patrice evra who had played for france midweek and moved ryan giggs to left back. the tactical shuffle worked. manchester united won 4-2 with rooney scoring a hat trick. a few weeks later at the end of the season west ham got relegated to the championship. ferguson notes this kind of twiddling happens on a fairly regular basis for him
