Matthew McConaughey was first offered the part of Marty in True Detective (2014), but Woody Harrelson ended up taking that spot instead. Once McConaughey read the script, he made it clear he wanted to play Rustin Cohle. When people reacted with shock at his choice, he didn't explain further; he just told them to go watch Killer Joe.
