Malcolm McDowell shared how a disturbing scene in A Clockwork Orange (1971) came together through pure improvisation. Stanley Kubrick asked him, "Can you dance?" McDowell admitted, "I'm not a dancer," yet he started doing a soft-shoe routine and instinctively began singing "Singin' in the Rain." He explained, "Because subconsciously, I remembered that scene in the Gene Kelly film as being one of the happiest scenes I've ever seen on film." The song felt right for the moment, and Kubrick took it immediately. Within three hours, he had the rights of the song. This experience showed McDowell that Kubrick is not rigid in any sense but is very elastic when he's working.
