The original screenplay for Pretty Woman was titled $3,000 and written by J.F. Lawton. It started as a dark, gritty drama featuring a drug addicted sex worker and a cold, heartless corporate raider. In the first ending, Edward throws Vivian out of a limousine, hurls money on top of her, and drives away leaving her screaming in the gutter. Disney bought the script and gave it to director Garry Marshall. Hector Elizondo told Garry Marshall that the material was very dark for a Disney movie. Marshall responded that they would make it nice and fun. Julia Roberts later called the original story a really dark and depressing, horrible, terrible story about two horrible people. Lawton did rewrites inserting a happy ending before being fired. The fairy tale version of Pretty Woman grossed $463 million.
