Abby Zwerner Richneck bodycam footage
The age is the part I keep coming back to. A six-year-old shot his first-grade teacher at Richneck Elementary School in Virginia in 2023, and newly released bodycam footage shows what happened right after. Abby Zwerner took a bullet to the hand and one to the chest. It missed her heart. She was seriously hurt and still got her students out of the room. The boy sits on another teacher's lap in the video, swearing at officers and at her, telling them he doesn't care about jail or whether they call for backup. He says the gun came from his mother. What sticks with me is that the warnings apparently existed beforehand. Administrators at the school had been told more than once that day that the boy might be carrying a gun. A jury later found assistant principal Ebony Parker grossly negligent for not acting on those warnings. His mother, Deja Taylor, went to prison on child neglect and gun charges and was released in May. Zwerner won $10 million in a civil suit. Six years old.

For the first time, we're seeing what happened in the moments after a six-year-old shot his teacher at a Virginia elementary school in 2023. Where is the weapon? It's on the floor. The first grader, whose face is blurred, is sitting on another teacher's lap when he starts swearing and threatening her and the police officers who asked him where the gun was. If you want a piece of me, come get it on me. He just admitted that he had one. I mean, he does have the gun residence. The boy explaining where he got the gun. My mom had that. Six years old. Yes. I stole that from my mom. I don't care if you call backup, I don't care if I go to jail. The teacher, Abbie's Werner, survived being shot in the hand and chest. She was awarded $10 million in a civil case after suing assistant principal Ebony Parker. A jury found Parker grossly negligent for failing to act on warnings that the boy had a gun. The boy's mother, Deja Taylor, spoke to ABC's Lindsay Davis back in 2023. Do you all have any knowledge about the validity of accusations that he would run around and chase kids with a belt or say curse words to the teachers? No. Now that, no. He has ADHD. He had started medication and he was meeting his goals academically. Taylor served prison time for child neglect and gun charges. She was released this past May.
