Bye

Opening Ariana Grande's seventh studio album Eternal Sunshine, "Bye" immediately establishes a defiant, danceable mood. The track blends disco-funk and synth-pop with a four-on-the-floor beat, funky guitar riffs, and shimmering synthesizers that evoke a 1970s aesthetic. Grande co-wrote and produced the song alongside Max Martin and Ilya Salmanzadeh, who also contributed background vocals. Lyrically, the song marks a sharp departure from a toxic relationship, yet Grande delivers the message with a knowing smirk rather than bitterness. This dynamic contrast between upbeat instrumentation and introspective lyrics about accountability became a defining feature of the album's early reception.

Released on March 8, 2024, through Republic Records, the single debuted at number two on the US Billboard Hot 100. It held off the top spot only because Grande's subsequent lead single, "Yes, And?", occupied the number one position simultaneously. The track found similar success internationally, entering the top five in the UK, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. Critics responded warmly to its glossy sound; Pitchfork labeled it a "glossy, disco-funk opener," while NME hailed it as a "euphoric, self-aware banger." A music video directed by Christian Breslauer accompanied the release, featuring surreal vignettes that mirrored the song's playful energy. [تعديل]
