    نظرة عامة

On July 10, 2008, Apple flipped a switch and changed mobile software forever. The App Store launched with the iPhone 3G and iOS 2.0, offering roughly 500 apps, half of them games. It was a modest start for what would become the primary way people discover and download software on iOS, iPadOS, and iPod touch, and later Apple Watch and Apple TV. Developers build apps using Apple's iOS SDK, and every submission goes through a review process before appearing on the store. The catalog peaked around 2.2 million apps in 2017; cleanup of outdated 32-bit software has since trimmed it to over 1.9 million as of 2024.

The App Store isn't a game itself. It's a curated marketplace where users browse, search, and download games. Its discovery interface features editorial highlights, top charts, and curated collections. In-app purchases became a core monetization mechanic, fueling the free-to-play boom. The platform's search algorithms, ratings, and reviews directly shape a game's visibility and success. There is no plot or story, just a storefront designed for distribution.

Apple Inc. developed and publishes the App Store. Steve Jobs unveiled it; Phil Schiller later oversaw operations; Eddy Cue now manages the team as senior vice president of services. The platform runs on Apple's own operating systems, iOS, iPadOS, tvOS, and uses native frameworks like UIKit and SwiftUI for its interface. It does not rely on third-party game engines.

Critical reception has been mixed. The store is widely praised for its curated quality and security, but heavily criticized for its closed ecosystem. The Wall Street Journal highlighted its role in creating the app economy. Yet the mandatory 30% commission on in-app purchases has sparked antitrust investigations and legal battles, most notably the Epic Games v. Apple lawsuit in 2021. In 2024, the European Union's Digital Markets Act forced Apple to allow alternative app stores and sideloading in Europe, a major shift in its business model.

The App Store is a digital storefront, not a game with traditional mechanics. Users browse a catalog of apps and games organized by categories, top charts, and editorial collections. Search functionality lets users find specific titles. Each app page displays screenshots, descriptions, ratings, and reviews. Downloading a game is a single tap, after which it installs on the device. In-app purchases and subscriptions are handled through the store's payment system, with Apple taking a 30% cut. The platform also supports app updates, push notifications, and family sharing.
