Madonna moved to Lisbon in 2017 to support her son David Banda's football career and stumbled into a vibrant local music scene. The fado clubs of the city and Cape Verdean rhythms became the bedrock for her fourteenth studio album, which arrived on June 14, 2019 via Interscope Records. The project centers on Madame X, a shape-shifting secret agent persona that allowed the artist to explore diverse musical identities and lyrical themes ranging from love and freedom to gun control and racism.
